Welcome! I am so glad you’ve visited my site. I hope you find inspiration and support for your mindfulness practice and life.
The site provides information about my youth and adult mindfulness classes in and around Durham, North Carolina. Kate offers her own musings and insights on living more mindfully to help you cultivate and strengthen your own practice.
The name for the site, Mindful Beginnings, comes from Kate’s belief that every moment provides an opportunity to begin again and find more present moment awareness and joy. Kate’s youth classes provide students with a solid foundation of mindfulness at the beginning of their lives and this allows students to mature with greater self-awareness, emotional self-regulation, attention and more. Lastly, Beginner’s Mind is one of Jon Kabat-Zinn’s nine attitudes of mindfulness. Approaching life with a beginner’s mind means you are letting go of expectations, preconceptions, judgements and prejudices. You are approaching life with curiosity and experiencing events as if for the first time. Beginner’s mind allows you to see things in a new light and respond in new ways, rather than relying on automatic, old patterns of behavior.
Like many, Kate began her mindfulness practice during a tumultuous time in her life. She was experiencing tremendous change and was wracked with indecision, worry, anxiety and self-doubt. Her daily mindfulness practice became a refuge and over time allowed her to access her inner wisdom and experience greater contentment. Kate found that her mindfulness practice didn’t change her life circumstances, but allowed her to experience life with more ease. Although life was still challenging, everyday was no longer a battle.Kate’s transformational experience has encouraged her to share the gift of mindfulness with others. She currently teaches mindfulness to both children and adults in a variety of settings in Durham, North Carolina.
Kate has completed Mindfulness Fundamentals and Mindful Education Essentials courses Mindful Schools. After completing a Koru Mindfulness class, Kate became certified to teach Koru Mindfulness. She attended a 2-day Mindful Self-Compassion workshop with Kristin Neff and Chris Germer. Lastly, Kate has attended multi-day silent retreats and has taken numerous online meditation courses with Tara Brach, Sharon Salzberg and others.
